永濕者
Sai Kung Dogs, also known as 永濕者 (Yǒng Shī Zhě, literal ‘The Perpetually Wet’), is an avant-garde experimental music project hailing from Hong Kong and Guangzhou composed by Mo and Space. The name ‘Sai Kung Dogs’ is inspired by the beautiful nature reservation in Sai Kung, Hong Kong, which also set the project’s theme of nature and wildness. This project explores combining improvisation, industrial dance music and ambient noise to create their unique soundscapes. Playing different roles in the project, Mo's vocals infuse a primal essence into their music, while Space's sound exhibits a more rational and steadfast structure.
Originally, their style was improvising with instruments like the violin and guitar, meanwhile they kept practicing multiple electronic equipments for creating different modes of sound later on. Working on arranging performances structurally, they gradually developed a distinctive style, in which improvisation and noise blend seamlessly together, emphasizing the compositions with samples inspired by the nature. With a pre-designed program, they avoided the inexperience of manipulating complicated devices, and developed a combination of sound and vibrant body artistry to create a multi-sensory experience, delivering a vivid scene for the audience. Samples waving along with dancing, and suddenly a stronger noise feeding back from the mixer with some pedal, the contrast between the gentle and soft femininity and hash noises was unique and progressive during the time when the style of harsh noise in China was almost dominated by machismo. Recently, they focus back on the sound itself, and use electronic equipments to improvising without rehearsal.
Sai Kung Dogs pay more of their attention to live performances rather than recording or publishing. They have performed at several locations in China, including Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Yiwu, and Beijing.
